# The Junior Year Roadmap for 2027 College Applications

 By  [Priyanka Chandraker](https://www.admithero.com/blog/author/priyanka-chandraker)  ·   2 minute read

**Join our free webinar on Saturday, October 17 at 1:00 PM PT.** We will walk through how to write a strong Common App essay and how to build your junior year plan, then open it up for live Q&A. [Save your spot](https://www.admithero.com/events/oct17-webinar).

Junior year feels like a blur, but a little planning now makes senior fall far calmer. Here is how we suggest breaking it down.

## Fall

- **Finish the SAT, ideally.** Plan to take it twice. Most colleges superscore, meaning they take your best section scores across all test dates. Students also tend to do better the second time because they have had more practice.
- **Start looking at summer programs.** Applications open in the fall, and deadlines start in January. Admit Hero keeps a database of summer programs and has dedicated relationships with companies in Silicon Valley that place students for the summer.
- **Get help with the applications.** We help students apply to all of their summer programs. Most have several essays and require teacher recommendations, so each one is like a mini college application. A strong summer program can really help your student's profile, especially if their other summer activities are a little thin.

## Winter

**Do not check out.** Use this time to go deep on two things.

- **Test prep.** If the SAT is not done, buckle down. This gives you time for both the December and March test dates.
- **Your one or two major activities.** Many students list 10 activities, and we do not think you should. The Common App lets you list up to 10 and rank the scale of your contribution: local, state, national, or international. Our goal is to show achievement at the state level or higher. That takes time and effort and is hard to fit in during the school week, so use your breaks proactively.

## Spring

- **Wrap up the SAT.** The last date we recommend is June before senior year, so the summer is yours for activities instead of more studying.
- **Think about recommenders.** Start considering which teachers know your student best.
- **Start the college list.** Which schools do you want to go to, and why?
- **Begin brainstorming essay topics.** Two exercises to start with:
    1. **Qualities.** What qualities are you really proud of? What stories show those qualities in action?
    2. **Accomplishments.** What accomplishments are you proud of? What did you learn along the way, and what is your big takeaway about your personal growth?

## Summer

- **The Common App opens August 1.** Essay prompts rarely change, so you would not be remiss to start early.
- **Spend the summer on your activities,** not on test prep.

## Quick summary

| If you do this now | You avoid this later |
| --- | --- |
| Finish testing by June | Studying during senior fall |
| Go deep on 1 or 2 activities | A long list with no standout achievement |
| Apply to summer programs early | Missing January deadlines |
| Ask recommenders early | A rushed request in September |
| Brainstorm essays in spring | A blank page on Nov 1 |
