As one of the country's top public institutions, gaining admission can be competitive. This guide aims to demystify the application process and provide insight into how you can increase your chances of becoming a Wolverine. Understanding U-M's Admissions Criteria U-M employs a holistic review process, taking into consideration a variety of factors: 1. Academic Performance: Your high school GPA, the rigor of your curriculum, and your classroom performance are all crucial. High-level courses, such as AP or IB, and excellent grades in them can demonstrate your academic preparedness for U-M. 2. [Standardized Test Scores](https://www.admithero.com/blog/act-vs-sat-which-test-should-you-take): As of my knowledge cutoff in September 2021, U-M has a [test-optional](https://www.admithero.com/blog/should-i-still-take-the-sat-or-act-even-if-schools-are-going-test-optional) policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that while SAT or ACT scores are not required, you can still submit them if you believe they add value to your application. Please check the latest policy on the U-M admissions website. 3. Essays: U-M requires a few supplemental essays in addition to your Common Application or Coalition Application essay. This is your chance to show the admissions committee who you are beyond your academic achievements and how you align with U-M’s values. 4. [Extracurricular Activities](https://www.admithero.com/blog/the-comprehensive-guide-to-high-school-extracurriculars): Whether it's sports, community service, work experience, or clubs, U-M seeks students who are actively engaged outside the classroom and can contribute to their community. 5. Letters of Recommendation: U-M requires one counselor recommendation and one teacher recommendation. These should come from individuals who can provide a well-rounded view of your abilities, character, and potential. Boosting Your Chances of Admission 1. Excel Academically: Challenge yourself with rigorous courses and strive to excel in them. U-M is looking for students who are ready to handle the intensity of college-level coursework. 2. Build a Strong Extracurricular Profile: Deep involvement in a few areas that truly interest you is more impressive than superficial participation in many. Look for leadership roles and opportunities to make a tangible impact. 3. Craft Impactful Essays: U-M's supplemental essays are an opportunity to show the admissions committee what makes you unique and why you are a good fit for U-M. Be authentic, and take the time to draft, revise, and polish your essays. 4. Choose Recommenders Wisely: Choose teachers and counselors who know you well and can speak positively about your personal and academic qualities. 5. Demonstrate Interest: While U-M doesn't officially track demonstrated interest, engaging with the university can help you better understand its culture and offerings and reflect this in your application. 6. Apply Early Action: U-M offers a non-binding Early Action option. Applying early can show your enthusiasm for U-M and give you an early admissions decision. Conclusion While getting accepted into the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor may seem like a challenging feat, with a strategic approach and dedication, you can create a compelling application. Remember, the process is as much about self-discovery and personal growth as it is about earning that acceptance letter. Embrace the journey, and good luck on your path to potentially becoming a Wolverine!
