**Junior year is notoriously the toughest year, and a few common myths make it harder.** Here are four we hear from families all the time, and what to do instead.

## Myth: "I'll take the SAT whenever."

**The truth:** Try to finish by August, before school picks up. Junior year means AP classes and extracurriculars at the same time, and ideally you are not testing during Senior year while writing essays. If you cannot finish early, make a plan to take the official SAT at least twice. Most colleges [superscore](https://www.princetonreview.com/college-advice/sat-act-superscore), so a second or third sitting can only help.

## Myth: "Leadership means being club president."

**The truth:** Informal leadership counts too. Starting something, mentoring younger students, and organizing an event all show leadership. Pick one thing to accomplish this year, even if you do not have an official title. Colleges care about what you actually did, what changed because of it, and how you talk about it in your application.

## Myth: "Summer programs are impossible to get into."

**The truth:** Most summer programs are built for juniors. Make a list of 10 you want to apply to and start gathering materials now. Treat each one like a mini college application: you will need essays, your grades, a teacher recommendation, and you will be juggling different deadlines. Applications open in the fall and many deadlines fall between January and March.

## Myth: "Any teacher can write my rec."

**The truth:** Ask a teacher who knows you beyond your grades, like a club advisor or someone who has taught you for multiple years. For summer programs, you need to ask a teacher now who already knows you. For college applications, start thinking in the spring about who can write a strong recommendation so you are not scrambling at the last minute.

## Quick summary

| Instead of this myth | Do this now |
| --- | --- |
| Taking the SAT whenever | Finish by August and plan at least two sittings |
| Waiting for a leadership title | Pick one thing to start, mentor or organize this year |
| Assuming summer programs are out of reach | List 10 programs and gather materials early |
| Asking any teacher for a rec | Ask a teacher who knows you well, starting with summer programs |
